Learn more about brine shrimp cysts in their various stages of development, as well as how they are harvested.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources monitors the populations of various age classes of brine shrimp to ensure:
- An abundant commercial harvest
- A sufficient food source for birds and other species
- An adequate remaining amount to repopulate the lake each spring
All presented values are per liter of lake water.

The 2022–23 harvest season will begin at noon on Saturday, October 1, 2022. A mass die-off of eared grebes has been observed on the Great Salt Lake, and several individuals have been submitted for disease testing. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI- H5N1) is present in other wild bird populations in the area and is the likely cause of the die-off. Harvest may continue on the North Arm (lake and shore) until January 31, 2018 at 5:44 pm MST (official sunset) but must still be reported to the UDWR in the same manner as during the regular season. All other aspects of the rule remain in effect. Harvest will be permitted on the North Arm of the lake during this closure period (both lake and beach). During the closure period, we will continue to sample and determine if there are sufficient quantities of cysts to resume harvest. If the season resumes, it will open at noon on Friday, January 19, 2018. The decision will be based upon resource conservation. We will be in contact with the harvesting companies toward the end of the closure period regarding our decision. Daily harvest reports during the timeout will not be required except for harvest occurring in the salt ponds and on the North Arm. Daily harvest reports will still be required for January 11. Weekly harvest reports will also be required at the normal time. |

During the closure period, we will continue to sample and determine if there are sufficient quantities of cysts to resume harvest. If the season resumes, it will open at noon on Saturday, January 7, 2017. The decision will be based upon resource conservation. We will be in contact with the harvesting companies toward the end of the closure period regarding our decision. Daily harvest reports during the timeout will not be required for the South Arm Lake. However, reports for harvest occurring in the salt ponds, on the South Arm beach, and on the North Arm will be required as normal. Daily harvest reports will still be required for the South Arm Lake for December 30. Weekly harvest reports will also be required at the normal time. |

Daily harvest reports during the timeout will be required for harvest occurring in the salt ponds and on the North Arm. Weekly harvest reports will also be required for harvest occurring during this time. |
