Shotgun shooting basics taught to women at Salt Lake City clinic

SALT LAKE CITY — Women can learn the basics of shotgun shooting at a six-session clinic held at the Lee Kay Center for Hunter Education, 6000 W. 2100 S. in Salt Lake City.

The clinic will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 6, 13, 20, and 27 and April 3 and 10. It's being offered by the Division of Wildlife Resources' Becoming an Outdoors Woman program.

"Women who are interested in hunting aren't the only ones who should attend," said Nancy Hoff, Becoming an Outdoors Woman coordinator for the DWR. "There are target shooting ranges all around the state that women can go to and have fun using the skills they'll learn."

The cost for the clinic is $150 for all six sessions or $25 per session (participants do not need to attend every session.) Space is limited. Women must preregister by calling Gene Ekenstam, one of the course instructors, at (435) 882-4767 or mailing a check to him at 247 E. 200 S., Tooele, Utah, 84074.

Women who attend the clinic will learn basic shotgun shooting skills and get lots of practice shooting at flying clay targets.

Lunch and targets will be provided. Shotguns will be available for use if participants do not have their own. Participants will need to provide their own ammunition. "Light or Ultra Light 12-gauge trap loads are recommended," Hoff said.

"I'd also recommend dressing for cooler weather," she said. "Temperatures can still be chilly in March."

The course is being taught by Ekenstam and Louise Bradshaw. "They're a father-daughter team that have been teaching shotgun technique for many years," Hoff said. "We're excited to have them teach the Becoming an Outdoors Woman clinics this year."
