Free "Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs" workshop Feb. 28 in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY — Adults can learn how to get young people interested in fishing by attending a free "Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs" workshop offered Feb. 28 in Salt Lake City.
Sponsored by the Division of Wildlife Resources, the workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Department of Natural Resources, 1594 W. North Temple.
"'Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs' is an exciting drug prevention program for schools and communities," says Ann Evans, aquatic education specialist for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "With an emphasis on angling skills, fish biology, environmental stewardship and life skills, the workshop provides skills needed to give young people a positive recreational alternative to drugs and other undesirable behavior."
The workshop is for scout leaders, educators, nature center directors, police officers, after school program directors or anyone who works with or is interested in working with young people. Licensing points are available for teachers.
In addition to the free workshop, the DWR provides adults with free, ongoing support to help them keep young people involved in fishing.
To sign up for the workshop, or for more information, call Evans at (801) 538-4769 or e-mail her at annevans@utah.gov.
Another "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs" workshop will be held at the same location on March 27.
