Hunter education

Registration changes

Registration for Hunter Education classes changed on April 1, 2007.

Since April 1, 2007, students have been required to obtain a Hunter Education Registration Certificate for $10.00 either online or over the counter at participating DWR license agents, prior to registering for a Hunter Education course.

Registration Certificates are validated by the instructor and become a Hunting License upon successful completion of the course. This license is also valid for applying for permits in the draws. The Registration Certificate and corresponding license is valid 365 days from the date of purchase. In order to maximize your hunting opportunity, enroll in and complete the course soon after purchasing.

Steps for new student:

  1. Obtain a Hunter Education voucher for the course at any DWR office or license agent.
  2. After obtaining voucher, register for an advertised class with your local hunter education instructor.
  3. Take the voucher to the Hunter Education Instructor the first night of class.
  4. Upon successful completion of the course, the instructor will provide the validated small game license to the student.
  5. The Hunter Education card, commonly known as the "blue card," will be mailed to the student at the address provided on the voucher.

A couple of noteworthy items to remember:

  • Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult while hunting.
  • Regardless of when the student graduates, all hunting regulations such as season dates and bag limits will apply.
  • Students anticipating hunting out-of-state will need to allow enough time for the "blue card" to arrive in the mail.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting any Division of Wildlife Office or by calling (801) 538-4727.
