Lawson aerator

The meadow aerator, although not designed specifically for treating sagebrush, has shown promise in rejuvenating sagebrush stands. It may prove to eliminate larger, older, decadent plants while limiting harm to younger plants. It may also leave protective litter in place and create little soil disturbance. Definitive studies are currently underway to determine what changes in density and cover can be expected in certain sagebrush types (Wyoming big sagebrush, mountain big sagebrush, basin big sagebrush and black sagebrush)

Preliminary data collected on a research project at Deseret Land and Livestock (PDF format) in a decadent stand of Wyoming big sagebrush in Rich county Utah, indicates that density was reduced by 45% (5,300 – 2,500 plants/acre) while percent cover was reduced from the mid 20s to 2–3% one year after treatment (Summers, personal communication).

Data for additional treatments are listed in the following tables. Treatments for each site were carried out in the summer of 2002 and post treatment data was collected in the fall of the same year.
