Community fishing

The DWR's Community Fishing Program

This program will focus on the benefits fishing brings to communities and their aquatic resources. The Community Fishing Program works through partnerships with local governments and communities to enhance, develop and construct urban fishing sites. Citizen involvement is key to this part of the program.

Utah is the sixth most urbanized state in the nation. As the urban sprawl continues, ponds creeks and rivers are being consumed by towns and cities. If existing recreational sites are not protected and managed, they will be lost to growth. People in our community should be aware of the significance of having such a wonder in their backyard.

The true stewards of the environment are the people who regularly interact with it. Kids today are spending more time inside with computers and games, and less time learning about the world around them. These are the kids we need to reach with the Community Fishing Program. If we don't reach them now, then where will we and our environment be in the future?

The message is simple. We all need to take responsibility for our world.

Our children are our future

We need to get them back outside so they can interact with the environment. To ensure that children will have a chance to catch fish when they go fishing, we will stock trout in the spring and fall. We will also provide a stable self-sustaining warm water fishery where the water is suitable to do so. We will work within the communities to promote and aid in fishing clubs. The numbers of fishing clubs and members must increase every year.

So you see, the future is in our grasp! There is strength in numbers, and if we work together, we will have success.
