Blue Ribbon Fisheries

Panguitch Lake

Location:: Garfield County; take State Highway 143 southeast from the town of Panguitch (located on U.S. Highway 89).

Game fish: Rainbow trout, Bear Lake cutthroat trout, and some brook trout.

Size: 1,234 surface acres at full pool about 50 feet deep.

Elevation: 8,212 feet

Conservation Pool: None, natural lake elevation maintains low water pool.

Maximum water temperature: less than 75° F.

Productivity: Stocked annually with rainbow trout and Bear Lake cutthroat trout. Some natural reproduction occurs in tributary streams.

Type of fishing available: Trolling, fly, bait casting, boat, float tube, shore, and ice.

Angler pressure: High. Popular summer fishing area.

Accommodations: National Forest Service Campground, concession campgrounds, lodges, restaurants, boat ramps, boat rentals, and cabin rentals.

Food: Food is aavailable at lodges located around the lake or in Panguitch.

Boat ramps: Two public boat ramps. Other boat ramps located the lodges.

Boat rentals: Yes, available at the lodges.

Fish food: Fish, scuds, terrestrial and aquatic insects.

Land ownership: Much of the lake is located on the Dixie National Forest, but some of the shoreline is private property.

Access: Paved road along three sides of lake with gravel county road along north shore. Take State Highway 143 southeast from the town of Panguitch (located on U.S. Highway 89) 20 miles to the lake.

Unique attraction: In the fall bald eagles congregate around the lake to feed on fish until the lake freezes. Best time is about October 15 until Thanksgiving.
