Box Elder County

06/25 — a Wasatch Audubon group observed a Greater Yellowlegs on their trip led by Bill Fenimore of the Layton, Wild Bird Center at the Tri-State marsh property West of Corrine, South of the Thiokol Hwy. and North of the Bear River Duck Clubhouse. They also observed a dozen adult Snowy Plovers and several pair with chicks. Their were many Stilts and Avocets all with chicks it seemed, as well as Killdeer. They also had Common Yellowthroat.

06/20 — Bridget Olson, Wildlife Biologist at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge counted eleven Dowitchers on several of the management units. They were adults still with breeding plumage, though several looked like they had begun molting. Another unusual shorebird Bridget observed was a Greater Yellowlegs on June 6.

06/22 — Nicky and Carol Davis birded the Golden Spike State Park and reported Eastern Kingbird, Say's Phoebe, Virginia Rail, Sora Rail, Ibis, Pied-billed Grebe, Ruddy Duck, Clark's Grebe, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow Warblers, Swainson's and Red-tailed Hawks, Harriers, Lark Sparrows, Loggerhead Shrikes, Sage Thrashers, Terns, and a group of Sandhill Cranes dancing about in a field also occupied by Long-billed Curlews. The best bird of the day was the Short-eared Owl standing in a field not far from Thiokol.

Davis County

06/18 — Kent Morby reported a White-winged Dove at his feeder in Bountiful. He was able to photograph the bird.

06/20 — John F. Cavitt, Ph.D., Dept. of Zoology observed 6 Black Terns with several Forester's at Farmington Bay Wildlife Management Area in the south west corner of Unit 1. From the WMA north entrance follow the road to Goose Egg Island. The access beyond this point is restricted to foot and bike traffic. Walk south along the dike until you come to the parking area and boat ramp. The birds were foraging near the gates that divide Units 1 and 2.

06/01 — Joel and Kathy Beyer found a Yellow-throated Warbler at the Fielding-Garr Ranch on Antelope Island. It was high in the large cottonwoods behind the ranch house. It reappeared later in the Russian olive trees near the marsh fence. On both occasions the warbler was actively hunting the moths that were filling the air like cotton from the trees, but it didn't fly about much. Instead, it stayed close to the trunks and large branches, gleaning from them. Also at the ranch was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. A Grasshopper Sparrow was seen along the road about a half mile north of the ranch. A male Peregrine Falcon was at the first bridge on the Causeway.

Garfield County

06/19 — Dana Green and Pomera Fronce observed the Acorn Woodpecker in the same location where he has been seen for so many months. They found many other good birds along Highway 12 including Western and Mountain Bluebirds, Grace's Warblers, Clark's Nutcrackers and three male Williamson's Sapsuckers (at the Wild Cat Visitors' Center).

06/01 — Steve Summers observed one Common Tern with a few Forster's Terns at Panguitch Lake. Other birds of interest there were 2 Franklin's Gulls, a singing Willow Flycatcher and a Black-crowned Night-Heron. Also there were many displaying Western Grebes a few displaying Clark's Grebes.

Salt Lake County

06/16 — Carol Davis and Nicky Davis birding near Kennecott observed a blue-gray Gnatcatcher and saw a few more in Butterfield Canyon.

06/17 — Jack Holley birding along the Jordan River observed a Green Heron and a male Yellow-breasted Chat singing. To get to where it is you can go on 3300 South to 1100 West. Turn north and follow it to the Oxbow Trailhead by the Oxbow Jail. Walk over the footbridge and along the asphalt trail to where you can see Parley's Creek Outlet. You can see a dirt trail going off to the West. Follow it. He saw it before reaching the boardwalk.

06/01 — along highway 138 South of Grantsville Joel & Kathy Beyer observed saw 2 Northern Mockingbirds, 2 Burrowing Owls, Long-billed Curlews and young. On the South shore of the Great Salt Lake, at the mouth of Lees Creek, were 16 Snowy Plovers.

Summit County

06/12 — Lee Shirley reported a Varied Thrush on the Mirror Lake Highway between Lilly Lake and Lost Lake.

Uintah County

06/25 — Carol Davis and Nicky Davis birding Ouray National Wildlife Refuge observed American Bittern, blue grosbeaks (both male and female), a long-billed Dowitcher, black terns, orioles, black-headed grosbeaks, lazuli buntings, Sora, common yellowthroat.

Utah County

06/29 — Carol Davis birded the Nebo Loop and saw mountain bluebirds, spotted towhees, warbling vireos, western tanager, fox sparrow, hermit thrush, ruby-crowned kinglet, red-breasted nuthatch, hairy woodpecker, Red-naped sapsucker, great blue heron, red-tailed hawk and pewee. At Salt Creek Canyon at the little dam she saw a scrub jay, catbird, kingfisher, red-winged blackbird, and the elusive yellow-breasted chat.

06/25 — Tom Williams birding Nebo Loop observed a group of Purple Martins — one male, several females/juveniles. They were perched in a dead tree 1.1 miles north of the Nebo Bench Trailhead, on the right side of the road going north from the trailhead.

06/17 — KC Childs and Eric Huish reported a Hooded Merganser, Eastern Kingbirds and a Sora Rail at Timpanogas Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Washington County

06/28 — Pomera Fronce reported observing a Rufous-crowned Sparrow, near the amphitheater in Springdale. At Lytle Ranch and vicinity Larry Tripp and Pomera saw Lesser Nighthawks, Common Poorwills, Cactus Wrens, Scott's Orioles, Bell's Vireo, Hooded Warbler and Ladder-backed Woodpecker. At Pine Valley were a Grace's Warbler and a low-flying Northern Goshawk and a Summer Tanager at Red Hills.

06/29 — at Southgate Golf Course Larry Tripp and Pomera Fronce observed a Green Heron. At Washington they saw Eurasian Collared, Inca, Mourning and White-winged Doves. At Oak Grove they reported Wild Turkey, Black-throated Gray Warblers, Western Bluebirds and Bushtits.

06/13 — Larry Tripp reported an Elf Owl at Lytle. There may have been two birds although only one was seen. Larry also reported a Cassin's Kingbird near Utah hill and a Black-hawk at Lytle.

06/10 — Larry Tripp saw a Zone-tailed Hawk 1/4 mile below Baker Reservoir, along the Santa Clara River.

Wayne County

06/19 — Dana Green and Pomera Fronce birded Capitol Reef National Park and observed Ash-throated, Cordilleran, Gray and Willow Flycatchers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Juniper Titmouse, White-throated Swifts, Black-throated Gray Warblers, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher's and a beautiful Black-throated Sparrow.

Weber County

06/21 — The Layton Wild Bird Center Saturday morning bird walk was held at the North Arm of Pineview Reservoir. The group enjoyed seeing great views of a Fox Sparrow, Cat Bird and Yellow-breasted Chat, as well as young Osprey on the nesting tower.

06/03 — Misty Rowe reported a male Painted Bunting coming to a feeder in her yard over the last three days. It typically has shown up from 7 a.m., until 11 a.m., and late in the evening, around 7 p.m. She welcomes birders who would like to try for the bird. Her address is 6235 W. 5800 S., Hooper, telephone 985-0522. The feeder that the bird comes to is in the East side yard, hanging in an arch of Wisteria.
