Cache County

03/16 — James Lofthouse reported twelve Barrow's Golden Eye at the first Dam, as you head into Logan Canyon.

Davis County

03/29 — The Layton Wild Bird Center regular Saturday morning bird walk group saw a Northern Mockingbird at Fielding Garr Ranch on Antelope Island State Park. The bird was approximately 200 yards East of the shearing barn near some corrugated tin and broken fencing. Kris Purdy relocated the bird in the same area Sunday.

03/30 — Kris Purdy reported five Barrow's Goldeneye on the South side of the Antelope Island causeway between mile markers 0 and 1. She also was able to sort out two Horned Grebes in alternate plumage among the many Eared Grebes.

03/22 — Joel and Kathy Beyer observed a male Eurasian Wigeon at Farmington Bay WMA. It was seen from the entrance road, south of the maintenance buildings, where it makes a 90-degree turn to the west. Park in front of the locked gate at the curve, and look southeast to the water channel on the far side of the reedy marsh area. The Eurasian Wigeon was in this channel, along with several American Wigeon and a few other ducks. The channel is separated from the main pond by an earthen dike. Because of the distance, a scope is necessary.

03/02 — Joel and Kathy Beyer birding at Farmington Bay WMA reported Herring Gulls, Thayer's Gulls, the first winter Glaucous-winged Gull is still present, and three Glaucous Gulls (one adult and two first winter). All of the Gulls were seen at or between the first and second bridges along the west dike, on both sides. They counted over 125 Bald Eagles, with 90 sitting in the dead trees and snags along the north dike. Hundreds of Tundra Swans, and about 100 each of Pelicans and Avocets were observed too. A Merlin was seen at the east end of Glover Lane near the I-15 off-ramp.

03/01 — Brian and Christopher Currie observed 10 Snow Buntings on the Antelope Island Causeway between mile marker 2 and 3.

03/01 — At Farmington Bay Dana Green saw 2 Thayer's Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, a Glaucous Winged and many Herring Gulls.

Juab County

03/30 — Jack Binch reported observing three different American Bitterns in the same fifty yard area at Fish Springs. Also noted were two small flocks of Long-billed Dowitchers.

03/09 — Joel & Kathy Beyer observed the Black Scoter previously reported at Mona Reservoir. It was east of the dam.

03/02 — Lu Giddings reported a BLACK SCOTER in the inlet immediately behind the dam at Mona Reservoir. It had the characteristic black slightly hooked bill with a large bright orange-yellow bump on the upper bill. The bird was dark, with dark eyes and dark legs and feet.

Millard County

03/09 — Gunnison Bend Reservoir, near Delta, David Allan reported seeing a Gray Catbird. It was feeding on Russian Olives in the same area that the Black Phoebe has been reported (below the spillway). There are still plenty of Snow Geese hanging around; also, a lot of Ross's Geese. The previously reported Black Phoebe is still in the area.

03/02 — Jack Torrey and Glenda Cotter observed Pinyon Jays. Going west from Nephi on Highway 132, after you drive across the valley and enter the first mountain pass, the North side of the road changes from dead trees to live Pinyon. About halfway up on the right under the power poles there was a small (~12) flock of jays, just west of mile marker 28. They also saw the Black Phoebes previously reported at Gunnison Bend reservoir below the spillway, along with the Snow Geese at the reservoir.

Salt Lake County

03/28 — Parker Gay reported a Fox Sparrow that has been arriving in his yard for the last several years. It usually stays there for 2-3 weeks. He also had a Black Rosy Finch at his feeder the same day. He welcomes those wishing to visit. His address is 3801 Barbara Way, Salt Lake City above the Olympus Shopping Center. Call 278-8949 for directions if necessary.

03/16 — Bob Walters birding at Meyraban Wetland Park (east of 11700 S. and 700 E. in Draper) observed four drake and three hen Wood Ducks.

03/16 — Brian Harper reported seeing a Northern Cardinal in his South Salt Lake yard. His address is 3333 South 460 East. The bird was seen at 10 a.m. He previously lived in Virginia and is familiar with the Northern Cardinal. He has not seen the bird since. There are no feeders in his yard.

03/09 — Kris Purdy, Carol and Nicky Davis, along with Gary Rankin of Huntington, WV birder the Alta area with Bill Fenimore for the Rosy Finches. Kris, Carol, Nicky and Gary all enjoyed a life bird viewing of the Black Rosy finch, along side of the Gray Crowned for a great view and comparison. We were there at 8:30 a.m., until 9:30 a.m., at exit 4 off the Alta Bypass Road. Drive to the intersection crossing the stream. The home with the large TV dish in it has feeders just beyond the dish that the birds were coming too. Thanks to Pomera Fronce for good directions.

03/01 — Dana Green saw a winter wren just above picnic area 4 in City Creek Canyon.

Utah County

03/13 — Mark Stackhouse reported seeing several Sage Sparrows around the Provo Airport dike road. They were along the West side, about 300 meters north of the Southwest corner. He also saw an immature Northern Goshawk in the trees at the eastern corner, where the South extension heads south. It flew off to the East, and was last seen soaring over Springville.

Washington County

03/22 — Larry Tripp observed a Common Black-Hawk at Lytle Ranch in the upper area along the creek. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was also still at Lytle Ranch. On the Kolob Road there was a Black-chinned Sparrow that was on territory singing. It was up the road about 4 miles from UT 9.

03/14 — Bob Bradley and Tony Jones, found a Vermilion Flycatcher at the corner of SR-9 and 3700 West in the Brentwood area. 3700 West is the road leading to Stratton Pond. The Flycatcher was observed on the small Brentwood RV Golf course area.

03/08 — Larry Tripp relocated the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Lytle Ranch last weekend.

03/12 — Larry Tripp observed a Golden-crowned Sparrow while walking along the Virgin River Parkway from the parking lot that is along the South side of I 15 just west of Bluff Street in St. George. About 50 yards past the confluence of the Santa Clara River and the Virgin River along the bike path was the Golden-crowned Sparrow in with a flock of 15 or so White-crowned Sparrows.

03/09 — Larry Tripp birding at Zion National Park observed two Rufous-crowned Sparrows on the sand bench trail which was a first in Utah for him. They are much paler then the coastal race that I'm used to seeing. At Springdale pond there is a Yellow-shafted Flicker that looks like a pure bird not a hybrid.

03/03 — Larry Tripp birding Lytle Ranch today reported that the wintering Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is still there at the beginning of the orchard. While observing the Swans, two flocks of Snow Geese passed overhead, providing great views against an azure blue sky.

03/08 — Jack Rensel and Keith Evans observed three Trumpeter Swans on Pineview Reservoir. Each had a neck band and painted wing for identification. They were able to record the neck band numbers for reporting the sighting.

03/02 — Joel and Kathy Beyer reported a Lewis' Woodpecker in Pleasant View, at the North end of 900 West, near Pole Patch Estates. It was on the fifth telephone pole South of the Pole Patch Estates gated entrance. This is the third time this year they have seen the woodpecker on this particular pole.
